The Sanctuary of Atotonilco, known as El Santuario de Jesús de Nazareno was built between 1740 and 1776, its architecture is in the popular Mexican Baroque style and its construction is oriented to the west.

This invaluable Sanctuary has been the subject of hard rescue work for the past ten years. The Church consists of The Main Nave of 6 Chapels, inside it is difficult to find any surface without decoration; painting, sculpture and poetry, are embodied mostly by the painter Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre and to a lesser extent there are works by José María Barajas.
How to get to Atotonilco
By the Highway to Dolores, approximately 10 min. from San Miguel de Allende, take the deviation on the left side that will take you to Atotonilco.

What to do in Atotonilco
Easter (March or April) begins with the traditional bringing of the "Lord of the Column" from the Atotonilco Sanctuary. During the last Friday of Lent, throughout the city and especially in the Historic Center, altars to the Virgen de Los Dolores are raised; In the windows and patios of the houses of the faithful, fresh water and ice pops are given, representing the tears of the Virgin Mary.
