Moving to San Miguel? 4 Tips to Get Life to Flow

It’s impossible to get bored inSan Miguel de Allende. Period. There is something for everyone here —workshops, classes in all kinds of art, philosophy discussions, meditation, lectures, exercise—not to mention a plethora of restaurants to try out.

Nevertheless, some people find after they’ve been here awhile that their lives don’t always flow in the way they would like and they end up watching too much TV or wasting time on internet.

Nothing can prepare you for the culture shock, or feeling of disorientation you experience when you move lock, stock, and barrel to another country—even if you could describe yourself as worldly-wise and well-traveled.

Relocation is a huge transition!

Here are some tips for getting life to work when you’re feeling a little bewildered.

1) Make peace with your past

You have probably left behind loved ones when you moved here: aging parents, children, friends, and family. Making a big move like this can sometimes cause resentment, jealousy, and fear in those that have been left behind. Take time to get it right with these people. This may be simply spelling out why you made the decision you did, reassuring them how much they still mean to you, and exactly how you plan to keep the relationship healthy. You’ll be glad you made the effort.

2) Get help with things you dislike

There is a ton of bureaucracy here – petty details, forms to fill out, and accounts to set up. Everything can take a long time—this town runs on a different rhythm from the one you’re used to. This can suck the joy out of your life if you’re not forewarned. Get as much help with these inevitable tasks as you can; there are people who can ease the pain of all this drudgery for a reasonable fee. Hire them. Cultivate patience. It will serve you well.

3) Instigate power hour

Setting up some good habits can help enormously to get your life in flow. Every day here can be different and fun, but if there are things you want to accomplish, the days and weeks can pass quite easily without the slightest progress towards your goals. Instigate a power hour every day—1 hour without social media, TV, or telephone. (Ack! I know!) Instead put all your attention and focus on something you want to progress. This can be whatever calls you the loudest; your yet-to-be-launched career, that new book you’re writing, unpacking boxes, or your favorite procrastination project. Tell yourself 1 hour only and you’ll be amazed how much you get done. This feels so good.

4) Reinvent your life

However much you may want and intend to, you cannot completely recreate your old life here in San Miguel de Allende. Take this wonderful opportunity to revamp yourself and create a whole new wonderful life here that reflects what you’ve always wanted to do. Presumably this is why you moved here. Go for it.

If you take these tips to heart, you will find your new life will start to flow in the direction you choose…and then the real magic of San Miguel de Allende has a chance to set in.
