You Will Thank Us – 3 Top Chocolate Shops In San Miguel You Need To Know

In search of the “Food of the Gods” in San Miguel

Did you know that the origins of chocolate trace back to the Mayans and Aztecs?

They called it Xocolatl (SHOW-CO-LA-TIL) and considered it the food of the gods. So what better place to enjoy chocolate than here in México. And for those visiting San Miguel de Allende, you are in luck. We’ve got some great shops right here in Centro. Here’s a look at three that are definitely worth a visit.

  1.  Fantastic Xocolatl Chocolateria      This little gem of a shop in Colonia centro can be found a short walk from the Rosewood hotel. Owned and operated by Héctor Ramírez, it’s filled with all kinds of deliciousness. Héctor handcrafts these amazing treats himself and there is plenty for you to choose from. You’ll find chocolate bars, chocolate covered raisins, cranberries, and nuts. He offers an assortment of truffles in a wonderful range of flavors. They´re so beautiful to look at, its almost a shame to eat them.  ( Not really!)

Trained in México city, he sources his chocolate from Chiapas, México and is more than happy to let you taste some samples. He’s also super friendly and loves to talk about chocolate.

2. Mente Cacao

Chocolate lovers rejoice! You’ll find 3 locations for this establishment in San Miguel de Allende. I visited the shop on Mesones #74. This shop is all things chocolate for sure. The smells of chocolate will greet you as you enter and take notice of all the wonderful bars, truffles, marmalades, chocolate powders, and chocolate covered treats.

They offer hot & cold chocolate beverages as well as a freezer full of decadent chocolate ice cream. The specialty here is the chocolate made with honey (Miel). The chocolate is sourced from Tabasco, México.

Many different flavors to enjoy here. Be sure to sample the chocolate made with honey.
Ice cream in any flavor you like, as long as it’s chocolate. YUM!
MenteCacoa Mesones#74,   San Miguel de allende    Other location at Zacateros #17 and  Mercado Sano              Opens at 10AM

3. JOHFREJ C&V Chocolates

This family-owned Mexican chocolate company has been around since 1920. The peculiar name is actually made up of the initials of all the grandchildren of the founder. The chocolate is sourced from Tabasco, México and refined at their factory in Estado de México. They have 4 locations and their San Miguel shop is a pure delight.

The displays here are just an invitation to chocolate heaven. There is a huge selection of truffles in mouth-watering flavors. The specialty they tell me is the Rum nut truffle (Trufa Ron con nuez) which is one of their original flavors. It was delicious, trust me!

This shop is also a cafe where you can sit and enjoy a selection of coffees, teas, and of course hot and cold chocolate drinks. I recommend the Mayan hot chocolate.
